Artist's Strategy

Planning for Creative Freedom.

ARTIST’S STRATEGY is a personalized consulting service, helping actors strategize in order to create tactical next steps towards a successful, fulfilling career.

Artist’s Strategy was started by Joshua Morgan in 2014 while running a theatre company he had founded in Washington, DC. Trained as an actor at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, producing fell into his lap somewhat accidentally. On the path to building a successful theatre company through marketing, networking, fundraising and smart producing, he had the thought “why aren’t we applying these same principles to building an acting career?”

That idea led to tools, strategies and a codified system, specific to freelance artists, based on tried and true business principles. Influenced by his experience running for profit and not for profit companies, this way of working allowed him to strategize for his own career which has led to 2 Broadway shows and beyond.

Since its inception in 2014, Artist’s Strategy has worked with actors all over the world helping them develop structure in what is a very structureless industry.

FAQs

1

Why would I need this work?

Most actors have a feeling of powerlessness in this industry. You need this work if you are ready to step into the driver’s seat of your career and run an effective business as an actor. We work with actors at all stages of their careers who are navigating a structureless industry that demands we manage our time and resources effectively.

2

Does Artist’s Strategy do the work for me?

“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. You teach him to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” We are on your team, as consultants and confidantes, providing tools and principles that support you in running a successful business. Although we are always here to guide, advise and act as a sounding board, at the end of the day you will be doing the work.

3

What makes Artist’s Strategy different from other career coaches or programs?

Most other coaches focus on providing industry knowledge. While gaining this knowledge is absolutely a part of your work with Artist’s Strategy, we believe that actors are by default entrepreneurs. Therefore, our main objective is to help our clients create an infrastructure around their creative businesses; using and connecting various business principles to sustain themselves, build stability and create their own opportunities.

4

Is my money better served going towards “pay-to-plays?”

“Pay-to-plays” may be necessary stepping stones, however, they are a small piece of a larger whole. Depending on these programs often reinforces the limited scope of what an actor thinks is possible. We encourage our strategists to develop agency, independence and creativity to build credibility and connections from the ground up.

5

What does working with Artist’s Strategy look like?

We ask all new clients to commit to our affordable three month Creative Startup. We use these three months to focus on building organization around your business, teach you the principles and seven tenets behind creative entrepreneurship, and help you build a Five Year Plan. We encourage longevity in our client relationships and hope to be an integral part of your team for the long haul.

6

Does Artist’s Strategy only work with actors?

Although we specialize in helping actors, Artist’s Strategy has had a history of helping artists of all stripes build sustainable businesses, including: painters, filmmakers, singers and musicians. Schedule a free consultation to see if we can be of help to you.

7

How long does it take to “complete” Artist’s Strategy?

Following the three month Creative Startup, our hope is that you have a plan that you can begin working from, allowing you to build your business independently. Running a successful business is a lifelong process, and we offer an affordable continuation of the work through our Monthly Access subscription.

8

Why are Artist’s Strategy’s prices so affordable?

We have always recognized that the work we’ve created was “radical” given the ingrained thinking and beliefs that surround our industry. We also recognize most freelance actors often live paycheck to paycheck. Therefore, we have structured our pricing model to meet the psychological and financial needs of a working actor.

9

Will Artist’s Strategy help me grow my social media?

Marketing is often the largest piece of the Artist’s Strategy curriculum. Social media is one of the many possible marketing strategies you can employ. We will help you identify ways to grow your social media and, beyond our immediate curriculum, we work with Natalie Herzig who often consults individuals who are looking to take their social media platforms to the next level.

10

Is Artist’s Strategy going to connect me to industry contacts; e.g. agents, managers, casting directors, etc.?

Artist’s Strategy will help you build a strategy for using your current contacts to reach industry desirables. We are not, however, a “pay-to-play”. We wholly believe you have the power to manifest your own relationships.

11

What makes Artist’s Strategy qualified to help me build my business?

While the founder of Artist’s Strategy, Joshua Morgan, has had “commercial success” himself, he has always made it a point to make the curriculum the centerpiece of our qualifications. This work, stemming from his own experience running for-profit and not-for-profit businesses, has been the backbone of his own career. Our consultants are well trained and prepared to share the insights and value of what Artist’s Strategy offers.
